A Glimpse into History:
Native to Malaysia and India, patchouli’s name comes from the Tamil pachchai ilai, meaning “green leaf.” In the Victorian era, its scent was inseparable from luxury — Indian cashmere shawls were perfumed with dried patchouli leaves to protect them from moths, and without the fragrance, they were considered unsellable in England. In the 1960s and ’70s, patchouli oil and incense became iconic in counterculture circles for its ability to mask odours and evoke a free-spirited atmosphere. In Asia, it has even been used as a folk remedy for snakebite.
Safety Note:
For external use only. Always dilute before applying to skin. Avoid use during pregnancy unless directed by a qualified practitioner.
